Scientific Background
Climate change impacts are complex and show different characteristics for each landscape system. Their investigation conceptually requires the development of a holistic system approach. Scientists, engineers, and social economists jointly develop innovative analysis methods and models, which help to analyze, model, and quantify relevant ecosystem services of regenerative landscape and water resources for sustainable creation of value. This includes, e.g., the regeneration of groundwater reserves, runoff and flood generation in the receiving stream, and socio-economic development of agriculture in the rural area of Southeast Asia.
Project and Objectives
The main objective of INNO-ASIA is an international research networking of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) in the area of landscape system analysis and environmental modeling in the APRA region in Southeast Asia. By using the Integrated Land Management System (ILMS) developed by FSU the impacts of land use and climate change on Integrated Land and Water Resources Management are analyzed in projects, and consequently interdisciplinary, sustainable management strategies for relevant ecosystem services are developed.
As a basis for the implementation of the overall concept, ILMS was implemented in the first project stage (2010–2012) as a software platform for joint development and modeling at the INNO-ASIA partners.
In the second project stage (2013–2014) the cooperation structures established in the first stage shall be consolidated by three project components as follows:
- Consolidation of ILMS applications in target countries
- Introducing ILMS in existing R&D projects at the INNO-ASIA partners, and conceptualizing new joint research projects
- Further development to larger research structures for multilateral research sponsors
Aspects of Research Structure
The INNO-ASIA research structure is an open research network which can be used by all interested research groups from Germany and the APRA, thus complementing the international ILMS User Group.
